Architecture - residential projects
Design and construction of 1900 sq. ft. private residence and woodworking shop. The design of this house is an attempt to develop an architectural iconography which celebrates the history and uniqueness of the land upon which it’s built. The house sits in an irrigated hayfield along with some of the original machinery that used to work here, and reflects the design sensibilities of a common sense farmhouse with a few quirky contemporary twists. Outbuildings reminiscent of barn and stable forms reinforce the agricultural narrative.
Red House Revisited
1900 sq.ft. was just not enough for its new owners, 4,800 sq.ft. was more what they had in mind . The challenge was to accommodate the client’s wishes without compromising the integrity of the original structure. The solution? Treat the original house as one piece in a larger collage of interconnected forms, all based on the agricultural vernacular of the original. Additons include a lower level Master Suite for aging grandparents patterned after an Idaho pototo barn. The Entertainment Wing mimicks an almost fully stacked hayshed and features a covered roof deck and folding glass wall.
Henley Road Residence
Residential remodel of a fairly nondescript home in a fabulous location. Main interventions included the insertion of an exposed steel moment frame in the upper level Great Room framing a spectacular view of the Tetons, a reorganization of the front facade with an entry canopy and Master Closet bump-out, and the insertion of a temperature controlled Wine Room in a former crawl space. HandsOn Design provided full architectural services as well as built most of the custom cabinetry found throughout the project. That's the way we like it best- with our fingerprints all over the finished product.
Fall Creek Compound
6,000 sq.ft. full timber framed timber home for an extended family on three levels. Located on a steep hillside site with an upper level entry and walk out basement with four bedroom suites. A corkscrew staircase greets visitors at the front entrance and accesses an office loft tucked between the roof timbers. Project includes an extensive upper level entertainment deck with sweeping views of the valley, rustic stone and timber vernacular, three fireplaces and a glazed bridge spanning a water feature connecting the Garage wing to the main structure.
2,900 sq.ft. custom home with separate guest house, garage and shop structures. Project uses all natural products and low VOC finishes in order to mitigate client’s extreme chemical sensitivities. Green design features include heating via a ground source geothermal heat pump, reclaimed heavy timber structure and siding, and recycled denim fiber insulation. Project includes cabinet shop and guest apartment as part of Garage structure.
Fairways Estates Residence
4,200 sq.ft. private residence located in sagebrush and flat grassland subdivision north of Jackson. Full timber frame and SIPs panel construction, stone veneer throughout. Five bedroom suites, full basement with lightwell/ planters. Three car garage with loft above.
Cache Creek Residence
3,800 sq.ft. custom modular 2 family hillside home with a post-tensioned insulated split faced concrete block walk out basement. Project takes advantage of its hillside site through the use of upper level carport/ decks and private sunken courtyards to provide separation between tenants and enhance view corridors.
Flat Creek Guesthouse
Designed in collaboration with Medicine Hat Inc. of Bozeman, MT. 1,000 sq.ft. accessory structure with 2,200 sq.ft. of covered exterior porch envisioned as the first phase of a site development scheme which includes a 6,000 sq.ft. main house with barn, stables and garage. 6,000 sq. ft. custom home at Jackson Hole Golf and Tennis. Project features panoramic views of the Tetons, exposed steel and heavy timber trusses, four bedroom suites, three car garage and full basement with a home theater and recreation room featuring large masonry lightwell/ planters.
7,000 sq.ft. speculative residence located on a forested hillside accessed from below. Project represents an intricate balance between competing site and regulatory constraints: steep terrain, minimal disturbance, restricted height and partially obscured views. Solution includes a separate entrance pavilion with lower level entrance & stair tower, and glazed bridge to upper level living spaces. Unbuilt.
JH Community Housing Trust
28 unit affordable housing development in established East Jackson neighborhood. Units relate to historic “in town” Jackson vernacular by using a stylized Craftsman detailing. Environmentally sensitive low maintenance facades feature fibercement siding and trim. Constrained sites, an aggressive production schedule and the need for cost effectiveness in these privately subsidized homes led us to the use of modular construction techniques. Submitting the projects as Planned Unit Developments required a cumbersome public review process, but allowed the Trust to meet the density goals necessary to make the project financially feasible.
4,000 sq.ft. speculative residence located on a sagebrush hillside accessed from above. A geometric collision of volumes oriented on distant view corridors which screens adjacent neighbors from within. Project features innovative gabion terrace system and open bridge between garage/gatehouse & entry. Unbuilt.
First Phase of a larger rural site development proposal that includes an additional garage and main house. 1,000 sq.ft. dwelling above an oversized three bay garage.
